A new poll went live on StartUpArabia, you can find it on the sidebar on the right or vote straight from this post.
This poll asks a pretty straightforward question in a little quest to find out what people think Arab startups need the most at this point in time to be able to make it and succeed.
So without any further ado:
What do you think Arab startups need the most?
Feel free to further expand on your response in the comments section of this post.
Building a strong team in the early days of a startup must be the most challenging issue in the Arab world. We're not just tasked with finding the right-skilled people, but also face the aging ideology that a job at a years-old company has a better future than at a significantly younger company. Surely it is the case in many instances, but absent from the minds of people is how lucrative and rewarding it can be to grow, and help grow, a startup.
That may become less of a problem as startups in the Arab world start making noticeable success. We need, and by “we” I mean the mainstream, we need to read about startups that managed to grow exponentially; startups that made millions in IPOs for their employees, or startups that took in millions of customers or users in a short period of time. Only when people realize the benefit of joining a startup, only then, it will become easier to attract the talent. However, with the current state of affairs, when we only hear of startups in speciality news sources, and when most startups die off before changing the world as they promised, that ideology will not wear off.
I've noticed most people voted for “Funding”. I'm sure this is not what we need the most. It's not about money, it's about ideas that are really suitable for our cultures.
Yes, we might be using and in love of some ideas from US and EU, but when it comes to be between us, we need original local ideas.
I must agree with Mohammad Alfares. Original ideas will bring money. I think that we need a little bit of all, but I tend to lean more towards Original Ideas. Yet, I want to clarify that entrepreneurship does not require original ideas at all times. Google did not start with an original idea !
Hello all,
I didn't hesitate in choosing the strong team as the biggest challenge. In a society where we all like to play heads and everyone wants to be the president, we often fail to build on each others' strengths and pass the ball sometimes. we do have original ideas.. if we only listen to ourselves. we are often sided by glamorous “outside” ideas as being cool and hip and we rarely try to even think of inventing a solution. we often fall victim to “what can I do? this is my destiny” kind of thinking. but when we put our efforts, and most importantly, our emotions and passion in it, we surprise even ourselves.
I wonder why people look down at startups and stay away from them when we have such a high unemployment rate. I mean the least we can do is promote those individuals who are going out of their way to succeed. and by doing it, they are putting their hearts into it so what more can we expect out of service? I often get the best service from any small company, because they are building their clientelle.
anyway.. good to talk about it. many thanks
